Window coverings for new builds and townhomes
Markham has a wide mix of housing, from newer townhome communities to larger detached family homes. If you have just taken possession of a new build, chances are every window in the house is bare, and temporary paper blinds are not meant to last. That makes it a good moment to plan the whole home at once rather than room by room.
Townhomes
Townhomes often have narrow rooms over three floors, with a mix of standard windows, a patio door and sometimes a balcony door. Consistency matters here because neighbours and passers-by see the front of the house. Zebra shades and roller shades give a clean, matching look across the front windows while still letting each room choose its own light level.
Larger detached homes
In bigger homes you may have open-to-above family rooms, large back windows facing a yard and several bedrooms. Families often choose drapery for the main living area, cellular shades in bedrooms and blackout options in children's rooms so naps and early summer sunrises are easier to manage.
Motorized and smart shades for Markham homes
Many newer Markham homes are built with smart features in mind, and window coverings can be part of that. Motorized shades can be raised and lowered with a remote, an app or a schedule, which is handy for tall windows and for closing every shade on a floor at once. They also remove cords from the window, which many parents prefer in children's rooms. Read our motorized smart home guide to see how they can work with your home's setup.
If you are building or finishing a home, it helps to talk with us early so motorized options can be planned before the walls and window areas are finished.
Popular window coverings for Markham homes
- Zebra shades: a popular choice for townhomes, with adjustable bands for light and privacy.
- Roller shades: a simple, modern look in light-filtering or blackout fabrics.
- Motorized and smart shades: cordless control for tall windows and smart homes.
- Cellular shades: honeycomb shades well suited to bedrooms and nurseries.
- Drapery: custom panels that add warmth to open family rooms.

Frequently asked questions
I just moved into a new build in Markham. Where should I start?
Start with a free in-home consultation. We can look at every room in one visit, measure all of your windows and help you choose products that look consistent across the home, which is easier than replacing builder blinds one room at a time.
Are zebra shades or roller shades better for a Markham townhome?
Both work well. Zebra shades let you shift between filtered light and more privacy by adjusting the bands, while roller shades give a simpler, uniform look. Many townhome owners use matching shades on the front windows and choose blackout fabric for bedrooms.
Can motorized shades work with a smart home?
Yes. Motorized shades can be operated with a remote, an app or a schedule, and they can be part of a smart home setup. We will talk through your setup during the consultation and recommend the right option.
What are good window coverings for children's rooms?
Many families choose cordless options such as motorized shades, along with blackout or cellular shades to help darken the room for sleep. We can show you options during your consultation.
Is there a showroom near Markham?
Yes. Our showroom is at 1234 Reid St, Unit 9, Richmond Hill, ON L4B 1C1. You can book a showroom visit or have us come to your Markham home for a free consultation.
